This series explores the growing discomfort of becoming reliant on cheaply manufactured goods, inspired by changing habits during the pandemic. The cycle of single-use products has reached new heights as we try to remain as isolated as possible, but the amount of waste created is not sustainable. I decided to use cheaply manufactured industrial materials to represent our dependence on new habits of consumption. A central theme to these pieces is the idea of order vs. chaos, a conflict present in the way certain products and industries make our lives more convenient but may be harmful in the long run.

This series explores the growing discomfort of becoming reliant on cheaply manufactured goods and specific online services, inspired by changing habits during the pandemic. Transitioning to staying indoors and constantly staring at screens is uncomfortable on its own, but also leads to certain corporations becoming increasingly involved in our private lives. Amazon Alexa, Google Nest, and surveillance by Apple and Facebook come to mind. Staying online in order to get work done or communicate with others comes at the cost of having your privacy invaded for profit.

In quarantine, the cycle of single-use products has reached new heights as we try to remain as isolated as possible, but the amount of waste it creates is not sustainable. I decided to use cheaply manufactured materials, such as cardboard, wire, foam core, and plastic, in order to represent our dependence on new habits of consumption. In some pieces, I use air-dry clay to create a contrast between age-old human norms that have been upended by technological advances, for better or worse. A central theme to these pieces is the idea of order vs. chaos, a conflict present in the way certain products and industries make our lives more convenient but may be harmful in the long run.
