Girlhood
Shalini Rohra
I created these photographs out of my frustration with the stereotypes I frequently face because I am a girl. Putting on various photographed performances that demonstrate the harmful effects of these social biases, I address subjects, like talk of menstruation and expectations about body type. Because these issues are little expressed publicly, I want to create an open platform for addressing them. Empty backdrops and minimal color variation especially distinguish my photographs, as they emphasize the subject and the uneasiness that pervades the subject's situation. Through my work, I aim to challenge viewers’ biases and promote further inclusivity for gender.

I created these photographs out of my frustration with the stereotypes I frequently face because I am a girl. From a young age, I have constantly been told how I should dress, how I should speak, how I should eat, how I should look, where I should be, and what I should like based on my gender. It astounded me just how much the fact I was female determined my daily routine.

In my work, opposing how society perceives me as well as other women and girls, I confront female stereotypes by putting on various photographed performances that demonstrate the harmful effects of these biases. My use of self-portraiture demonstrates how personal this work is to me. As I experiment with various clothing styles and props, I address subjects, like talk of menstruation and expectations about body type. Because these issues are little expressed in the public eye, I want to create an open platform for addressing them.

Empty backdrops and minimal color variation especially distinguish my photographs, as they emphasize the subject and the uneasiness that pervades the subject's situation, which resonates with the discomfort I and perhaps other women and girls experience from these stereotypes. Through my work, I aim to challenge viewers’ biases and promote further inclusivity in regards to gender.
